Sumo wrestlers and sushi hit Del Mar this weekend

San Diego just leveled up its dining-and-entertainment scene in the most unexpected way possible, and it involves 400-pound warriors, fresh-rolled sushi, and a legendary Hawaiian host who also happens to be a recording artist.

Sumo + Sushi landed at the Wyland Center at the Del Mar Fairgrounds for two weekends — February 20-22 and February 27-March 1 — and it's exactly what it sounds like. Imagine sitting ringside as massive professional wrestlers collide at full force just feet away, while a local sushi chef hand-rolls your omakase in real time. Normal Friday night, right?

The 90-minute immersive experience describes itself as edu-tainment, and that's not just marketing fluff. Each show kicks off with a deep dive into the 1,500-year history of sumo, walking guests through the rituals, traditions, and rules of Japan's national sport before unleashing more than a dozen live exhibition matches. Wrestlers on the San Diego roster include Osaka Jo, Ohtani, Yuji, Ruru, Yama, and Meccha — all seasoned competitors who have fought at near-elite levels. A live Q&A with the wrestlers rounds things out.

Headlining it all is Konishiki, the first non-Japanese-born wrestler to reach ōzeki — the second-highest rank in sumo — and a three-time top-division champion. Born and raised in Honolulu, Konishiki has since reinvented himself as a Hawaiian musician and philanthropist, running the Konishiki Kids Foundation for underserved youth.

Ticket tiers start at $124 for viewing only, with upgrades including bento boxes from Ensui Sushi and Noir Sushi, front-row tables, and a VIP Sky Suite stocked with on-demand hand-rolled sushi from Sushi Roku and an open bar. Sunday shows on both weekends are all-ages. All other showtimes are 21 and over.

For those who really want bragging rights, an add-on package lets you step into the dohyo and go one-on-one with an actual sumo wrestler. Consider it the ultimate San Diego dinner story.
